REI: Material Translation
Title: Mountains of Trash
Materials: Reused Packing Paper, Damaged Camping Gear, Cotton Cord Location: REI Boulder Dimensions: 18’X 9’x 1’ Completed: June 2022
Artist Statement: Sustainability is very important to me as a human and an artist. In my art practice I have committed myself to using recycled/repurposed materials to create installations. This mountain scape, created uniquely for REI Boulder, is almost fully comprised of reused materials and is meant to resemble the outline of Boulder Colorado’s, Flatirons. All materials, with the exception of the cording, have been sourced from inside Boulder REI. The green packing paper composing the sky, is leftover paper from the shipping department. The fabric, which creates the mountains, is made of returned camping gear that was too damaged to re-sell and would normally be disposed of. Tents, sleeping mats, hammocks, rainfly’s, etc…, all given a second life and new purpose. My hope is that this installation will capture the same colorful spirit as our amazing outdoor community as well as continues to foster environmental awareness in a new way.
Acknowledgments: This instillation was commissioned and created for and with the wonderful humans of REI Boulder. I would like to thank the entire team for all their enthusiasm and help. Also huge thank you to my amazing friends and family who have always supported me and my big ideas.
special thanks to:
the Shipwreck Crew for helping collect the ridiculous amount of damages and paper to make this piece possible
Ashley Williams for all her work getting us the equipment we needed and coordinating everyones schedule
Thomas Landon for supporting the overnight installation shift and providing unmatched musical recommendations.
Isaac Marcus for his unlimited technical knowledge and day of assistance.
& finally our RSM Karen Repine for being an unwavering supporter of my vision and my art. Its empowering to have a manager that believes in their employees as much as she does. This truly wouldn’t have been possible with out her.
